Airlines May Charge 30% Of Fare For Wi-Fi!
Travelers just enjoy the news of Wi-Fi facility in flights to and from India. But in order to avail the in-flight data connectivity, you may need to pay at least 20-30% of the fare. Yes, you read it right.
Following the TRAI order of in-flight voice and data connectivity, airlines are considering different options to introduce the facility. For business class travelers on domestic and international routes, this new move may help the airlines to add value to their services. But it may not be an option for low-cost carriers.
As per the officials, the charges for the in-flight net connectivity would range from Rs 500 to Rs 1,000. And this will be for the duration of thirty minutes to an hour as per the international standards of charges levied by service providers for slots on satellites.
Hence this facility will be a little over the budget for those who do advance booking fares starting from Rs 1,200 to Rs 2,500 on short domestic routes or sectors.
On the other side, for flights that traverse the peninsula on intercontinental routes; this initiative of TRAI would be advantageous.
An official of a private airline stated that “We are discussing the feasibility of having the facility on domestic flights. The cost and demand may have to be factored in before taking a decision.” Plus the airlines also have to install antennae on planes based on how they decide to receive and send the signals.
